We need to reuse the key update logic for d0i3
as well.

Add some parameters to deal with the constraints
implied by the d0i3 flow (specifically, support
non-SYNC commands, and don't take mutexes that
might deadlock).

Change some commands to be ASYNC, in order
to simplify locking a bit.
