RFC: Deprecate MAKEALL Since buildman now includes most of the features of MAKEALL it is probably time to talk about deprecating MAKEALL. Comments welcome. Signed-off-by: Simon Glass <sjg@chromium.org>
MAKEALL: fix get_target_arch() to adjust to '-' in Status field Since the Kconfig conversion, boards.cfg scanned by MAKEALL is generated by tools/genboardscfg.py. Every board is supposed to have its own MAINTAINERS that contains maintainer and status information, but, in fact, MAINTAINERS is missing from some boards. For such boards, the first field, Status, is filled with '-'. It causes a problem for "set" command, which ignores '-' in its arguments. Consequently, get_target_arch() returns a wrong field and MAKEALL fails to get a correct toolchain. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <yamada.masahiro@socionext.com>
MAKEALL: Don't try to print size when ./u-boot is deleted In the case of BUILD_NBUILDS > 1, MAKEALL would try to print the size immediately after the u-boot binary is deleted by the call to: make -s clean Move the size print to before the clean Signed-off-by: Joe Hershberger <joe.hershberger@ni.com>

MAKEALL: run genboardscfg.py all the time This commit makes sure boards.cfg is up to date before starting the build tests. tools/genboardscfg.py exits immediately printing "boards.cfg is up to date. Nothing to do." when boards.cfg is already new. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <yamada.m@jp.panasonic.com>

MAKEALL: adjust for Kconfig - Use "make <board>_defconfig" instead of "make <board>_config". - Invoke tools/genboardscfg.py to generate boards.cfg when it is missing. - Show "Building ${BOARD_NAME} board..." message. (Prior to Kconfig, instead, mkconfig script displayed "Configuring for ${BOARD_NAME} board..." but it was removed.) Without this message, we cannot know which board is currently being built. - Do not show "# configuration written to .config". This message is useless and just annoying for MAKEALL. MAKEALL: make sure to invoke GNU Make Since the command name 'make' may not be GNU Make on some platforms such as FreeBSD, MAKEALL should call scripts/show-gnu-make to get the command name for GNU MAKE (and error out if it is not found). The GNU Make should be searched after parsing options because we want to allow "MAKEALL -h" even if GNU Make is missing on the system. Merge branch 'u-boot/master' into 'u-boot-arm/master' Conflicts: Makefile drivers/net/npe/Makefile These two conflicts arise from commit 0b2d3f20 ("ARM: NET: Remove the IXP NPE ethernet driver") and are resolved by deleting the drivers/net/npe/Makefile file and removing the CONFIG_IXP4XX_NPE line from Makefile.
Makefile: remove a cleaning target "tidy" Before this commit, "make tidy" did "make clean" + delete "*.depend*" files. But, we do not have "*.depend*" files any more, which means "make tidy" is the same as "make clean". This commit removes the redandant target "tidy". kbuild: change out-of-tree build This commit changes the working directory where the build process occurs. Before this commit, build process occurred under the source tree for both in-tree and out-of-tree build. That's why we needed to add $(obj) prefix to all generated files in makefiles like follows: $(obj)u-boot.bin: $(obj)u-boot Here, $(obj) is empty for in-tree build, whereas it points to the output directory for out-of-tree build. And our old build system changes the current working directory with "make -C <sub-dir>" syntax when descending into the sub-directories. On the other hand, Kbuild uses a different idea to handle out-of-tree build and directory descending. The build process of Kbuild always occurs under the output tree. When "O=dir/to/store/output/files" is given, the build system changes the current working directory to that directory and restarts the make. Kbuild uses "make -f $(srctree)/scripts/Makefile.build obj=<sub-dir>" syntax for descending into sub-directories. (We can write it like "make $(obj)=<sub-dir>" with a shorthand.) This means the current working directory is always the top of the output directory. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <yamada.m@jp.panasonic.com> Tested-by: Gerhard Sittig <gsi@denx.de>

MAKEALL: add -b (--board) option Some board have multiple configurations. For example, the board "m54455evb" has many configurations: M54455EVB, M54455EVB_a66, M54455EVB_i66, M54455EVB_intel, ... When we modify board-related files, we need to test all configurations based on such a board. In such a case, the new option -b is useful. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <yamada.m@jp.panasonic.com>
MAKEALL: rename boards_by_* functions to targets_by_* We expect boards_by_* function to return the 7th filed, 'Target', not the 6th field, 'Board name'. So the function names, boards_by_* are a little misleading, and should be renamed to targets_by_*.
